Manuka Smoked Progress Report "You may have heard Thomson distilled New Zealand?s first commercial batch of Manuka smoked whisky. Believed to be the world?s first Manuka smoked whisky, it will further emphasis New Zealand producers are capable of making diverse whisky styles. Something we?re quite proud of. Thomson Whisky brings you an update from the barrel. Made from 100% New Zealand grown malted barley, smoked using native Manuka wood, and distilled through a hand-beaten copper pot still, it's the Auckland based distilleries world first Manuka Smoke release, in its youth. This 'work in progress' bottling offers natural smoke, cinnamon, clove, and Manuka oils on the palate. The exclusive bottling will provide whisky enthusiasts with a taste of this young, smokey and fiery spirit, as a sample of what's to come. Truly a collectible piece of New Zealand distilling history. The single malt is being made from barley grown in the South Island and kilned using New Zealand Manuka wood. Rarely produced in New Zealand, smoky or peated whiskies normally hail from Scotland, and have cult followings of self-proclaimed 'peat eaters'. This new Thomson staple will impart a smooth natural smokiness reminiscent of peated Scotch, but will be entirely unique to New Zealand with its distinct Manuka notes. Well known craft brewing supplier Gladfield Malt of Canterbury has worked closely with us to perfect the brand new Manuka smoked malt for the brewing and distilling markets. Gladfield have designed and engineered a custom smoker to impart the best Manuka and smoke flavours into the finished malt. Responsible for the germination, smoking and kilning of the malt prior to distillation, it is a world first for Gladfield Malt as well.

2nd Bottle

The first bottle was superb the second bottle lacked the rich smokey flavour, it was just a poor thin knock off of the first batch. Will not buy again unless I hear that the rich smkey flavour has been returned to the whisky.

2nd bottle

Bewildered. This the 2nd bottle of the Manuka smoked Thomson I have bought. The first one really impressed me, I favoured it over a bottle of Caol ila 12 year. To my surprise the 2nd bottle was nothing like my first one, it's almost an entirely different flavour. Hard to pin point what it is, it seems lacking in the rich caramel flavour of the first. I can say the lasting taste in my mouth is the same, maybe the consistency isn't as refined as the big names from Scotland can achieve.
Still enjoying it.

Manuka Progress

Very light and fresh with almost a honeyed sweetness and some heat. Gentle hint of smoke. Very enjoyable and easy to drink - very youthful at this stage but loving it. Can only improve as the flavours and particularly the smoke intensifies. Looking forward to her progress and loving her right now too!

Beautiful flavour, can't wait for the aged product.
Smokey flavour is not over powering as some can be and is followed with sweet caramel. Smooth and very drinkable.

Wow! distinctive manuka smoke that reminds of tasty outdoor cooking smoke. On my 3rd bottle, guess I kinda like it...a lot!
