Auchentoshan Distillery (pronounced Aw-khen-tosh-an) is a Single Malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. The name Auchentoshan is gaelic and translates as "The corner of the field", the distillery is also known as "Glasgow's Malt Whisky" due to its close proximity to Glasgow and "the breakfast whisky" due to its sweet and delicate nature. Unusually for a Scottish distillery, Auchentoshan practices triple distillation. Generally the final stage of Scotch whisky production involves distilling the fermented mash in two copper stills. In Auchentoshan, a third still known as the "Intermediate Still" helps to gives a spirit strength of 81% ABV (162 proof). This triple distillation, in addition to an unpeated malt, gives Auchentoshan a more delicate and sweet flavour than many Scotch Whiskies. Maturation is mainly in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry butts though some Auchentoshans will mature in French wine casks.

The 12 year old is smooth, fresh and nutty with a golden honey appearance. It has a Cr?me Brulee smell with a burst of citrus and the signature nuttiness and green leafiness of Auchentoshan.

To taste the palate is smooth and sweet with hints of tangerine and lime.

To finish, it is a gingery and slightly drying with a pleasant lingering nuttiness.

Smooth and full of flavour

I have previously tried the Three Wood version of this. This whisky is very smooth and full of flavour very much a favourite of mine now.

Casual Whisky

With a little sherry influence, some bourbon notes of spice and vanilla, honey and soft fruits as well this is a decent and very smooth session whisky delivered at a basic 40% ABV.
The casks they've used must have been ok. The triple distillation works a treat.. Its just a shame that the spirit is so diluted. What could this have been left unchill filtered and at a higher ABV.
An opportunity missed

Firmly Regular

TL;DR- Firmly regular in its presentation as Whisky. The 3x Distillation is a nice touch. It’s smooth, and slightly spicy. It’s aromatic, fragrant, crisp/refreshing yet dry, and sweet. Overall it’s rather unremarkable, but nonetheless rather enjoyable.

Average at best.

Triple distilled for smoothness but not as smooth as Jameson. Sherry/red fruits on the nose, can feel an underlying grainy harshness. On the palette it's ok. Can taste a bit of pepper but mostly varies between stewed and rotten fruits. Short finish.
