The word Bilancia (be-larn-cha) means, in Italian, balance, equilibrium and harmony. These terms have obvious connections with wine and winemaking, but also, Bilancia is the Italian word for the Zodiac sign Libra which both Lorraine and Warren were born under. Warren worked in Southern Italy for a number of harvests and the name came to him whilst reading his Horoscope in the Italian newspaper!
The philosophy of balance, equilibrium and harmony is something that is carried through all aspects of the winemaking and, hopefully, people will see this when they drink the wines.
The la collina vineyard is a steep, terraced and incline planted hillside vineyard on the North/ Northwest facing slopes of Roys Hill, west of Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The hillside is protected from the cooling effects of the southerly and southwesterly winds and during the growing season is bathed in sunshine. The terraces are planted to Syrah whilst the lowers slopes and Gravels flat are planted to Chardonnay and eight rows of Viognier/Marsanne/Roussanne.
"Refined yet powerful, this is one of New Zealand's best Syrahs. As winemaker at Trinity Hill, Warren Gibson's credentials are stellar. This is his own beloved expression of the Syrah grape, made from their top vines on a sun-facing hillside above the Gimblett Gravels. This exceptional fruit is hand-havested in multiple passes and co-fermented with skins of Viognier from the same site (this classic combination is a tradition at Trinity Hill too) before the gentlest of treatments in the winery, including 21 months "resting" in light-impact new French oak. With elegance and harmony to burn from a great vintage for Syrah, this will keep aging or drink now."
