Scarabus is a new single malt whisky selected by Hunter Laing & Co. who marked the opening of their new Ardnahoe distillery on Islay. While the origin of this whisky is a mystery, it is a big dram, offering an aroma of sweet syrupy pears, white raisins, freshly roasting peanuts and plumes of peaty smoke. A briny sea-salt and leathery note adds depth, again nutty then spiced with mace and vanilla on a very oily and viscous mouthfeel. A fantastic new arrival and a must try for fans of Islay's oily, coastal peat smoke.

good Islay dram

I didn't rate Scarabus as a complex dram but it has many Islay characteristics - good peat, iodine and smoke, a good winter sipper.

Very good

Young, vibrant. You need patience with this one. A young Caol Isla perhaps? Needs atleast 15 mins in the glass with a couple of drops of water to lose the Ethanolic blast and turn into the quality sipping dram, which it is. Good buy if/when on special.

A good priced Islay

I don't know which distillery this is from but it doesn't taste like Laphroaig or Ardbeg. However, I believe it is sourced from the same distillery as Ileach Islay Cask Strength as there is a lot of similarity between these two. Both have a similar citrus, lemon note around the mid-palate. Good peat smoke, vanilla and pear sweetness, nuttiness, and good mouthfeel.
